Strategic Young Researcher Overseas Visits Program for Accelerating Brain Circulation

About the Program

As part of 'Strategic Young Researcher Overseas Visits Program for Accelerating Brain Circulation,' the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has adopted 'Innovative Japanese Studies through International Cooperation: The Fostering of Young Researchers by Cooperation with Overseas Institutes of Japanese Studies' at the Graduate School of Humanities, Kobe University. This program is to be implemented from 2013 to 2015.
The primary goals of the program are as follows:
  1)To provide young researchers with the opportunity to teach, present, and publish works on
   Japanese Studies in both japanese and in other languages.
  2)To give young researchers of japanese Studies in japan an opportunity to learn different
   viewpoints from overseas and, thus, widen their own perspectives and approaches to the field.

Program Overview

This program will send young researchers to leading research institutes of japanese Studies at three universities in Europe (Ca' Foscari University of Venice, University of Oxford, and University of Hamburg) for one year, At the same time, it will allow associated researchers to participate in joint-research projects between Kobe University and these three European universities-japanese Literature and Modern japanese Sociocultural Studies (Ca' Foscari University of Venice); Linguistics and japanese Linguistics (University of Oxford); Teaching japanese as a Foreign Language (TjFL) (University of Hamhurg). This program aims to strengthen and develop the friendship hetween Kobe University and these partner institutions, as well as to provide an opportunity for young japanese researchers to become involved in japanese Studies programs around the world.

The Merits of the Program

Through this program, Kobe University and its three external partners can develop an international network that would enable further academic cooperation in the future. Young academics that take part in this visiting-scholar program will benefit Kobe University by contributing to the education of the next generation of researchers in the university. Through this international collaboration, Kobe University can establish continuous, meaningful, and mutually beneficial international relationships that would promote 'Brain Circulation'. )Young Japanese researchers of Japanese Studies will have an opportunity to engage in international joint-research, which would help them to pursue their academic and professional careers abroad. Specifically, participants in this program are expected to acquire the following;
  1)Language fluency, improved organisational skills, international awareness, and a more
   comprehensive perspective gained through working with researchers from diverse backgrounds
  2)An ability to express ideas clearly and assume leadership roles in an institutional environment.
   These 'study abroad' experiences would not only aid participants in the facilitation of future
   international collaborative projects in Japan, these skills would also be beneficial to success in
   other non-academic, professional contexts
  3)The development of an extensive network with leading researchers from all over the world
