Personal Background

Ph.D., LMU (University of Munich); M.A., B.A., Kyoto University. He is working on the social and cultural history of the pre-modern Islamicate world, particularly Mamluk Egypt and Syria (13th-16th centuries). His research interests include Arabic historiography, intellectual networks in the Arab world, enviromental history of the Middle East. Recently, he also engages with Digital humanities and computational analysis of Arabic corpus.
