Master’s Degree program

First application period

• Application requirements
Those who wish to enrol as a special international student must be a non-Japanese citizen hoping to study abroad in Japan having already entered the country or intending to enter the country, and must also fulfil one of the following requirements.

  • (1) Have been conferred an undergraduate degree.
  • (2) Have completed 16 years of school education abroad.
  • (3) Have completed within Japan a course under a foreign university system, at an institution designated as equivalent to a foreign university (Japan campus of a foreign university designated by the Minister for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).
  • (4) Have been deemed, through an eligibility screening process within our School, to be at an academic level equivalent to or greater than a university graduate, and also to have reached at least 22 years of age (for other qualification requirements please refer to the Student Application Guidelines).

• Selection method
Selection will be carried out based on an examination to determine level of academic proficiency, and the submission of a research outline and results transcript.

• Application period and examination schedule

  • Application period: late August
  • Written examination, oral examination: late September
  • Notification of result: early October

• Fees

  • Enrolment fee: 282,000 yen
  • Tuition fees: Spring Semester, 267,900 yen; Fall Semester, 267,900 yen

(In the case that tuition fees are adjusted during enrolment at university, the new fee will be applicable from the time of adjustment.)

PhD Degree Program

• Application requirements
Those who wish to enrol as a special international student must be a non-Japanese citizen hoping to study abroad in Japan having already entered the country or intending to enter the country, and must also fulfil one of the following requirements.

  • (1) Have a Master’s degree or professional degree.
  • (2) Have been conferred a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or professional degree abroad.
  • (3) Have been deemed, through an eligibility screening process within our School, to be at an academic level equivalent to or greater than a holder of a Master’s degree or professional degree, and also to have reached at least 24 years of age (for other qualification requirements please refer to the Student Application Guidelines).

• Selection method
Selection will be carried out based on an examination to determine academic proficiency, the submission of a research plan and Master’s thesis (or equivalent thesis), and a transcript of results submitted by your previous university’s dean or departmental head.

Research Students (Non-Degree Seeking Students)

SThe research student system allows for individuals to engage in research on specialist fields at the Faculty of Letters and the Graduate School of Humanities. Those overseas students hoping to enter into one of our graduate programs will first enter the university as a research student, being able to prepare for specialist research under the guidance of a supervisor with a view to either a Master’s or PhD program. No degrees or credits can be awarded by the university to research students.

1. Application requirements

Undergraduate research students

  • 1. One who has been conferred the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree or junior college degree, or is expected to be conferred one by the time of enrolment to the university.
  • 2. One who has completed 14 years of education abroad.
  • 3. One who has been deemed by the Faculty of Letters to be at an academic level equivalent or superior to a college graduate.

Graduate research students (Master’s degree program)

  • 1. One who has been conferred the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree, or is expected to be conferred one by the time of enrolment to the university.
  • 2. One who has completed 16 years of education abroad.
  • 3. One who has been deemed by the Graduate School of Humanities to be at an academic level equivalent or superior to a college graduate.
  • 4. Other requirements (for details please refer to the Research Student Application Guidelines).

Graduate research students (PhD degree program)

  • 1. One who has been conferred the equivalent of a Master’s degree, or is expected to be conferred one by the time of enrolment to the university.
  • 2. One who has been conferred the equivalent of a Master’s degree abroad.
  • 3. One who has been deemed by the Graduate School of Humanities to be at an academic level equivalent or superior to a Master’s graduate.

The following information applies to all research students.

2. Note for applicants
When applying to be a research student it is necessary to gain the approval of your desired supervisor. You must gain this approval by sending the Research Student Application Approval Form (accessible from the Graduate School of Humanities website) and all other necessary documents to your desired supervisor, at least four weeks before the beginning of the application period.

3. Selection process
Candidate selection will be carried out through a review of submitted documents and an interview. For those living abroad who require a visa, we will conduct the interview online using Zoom or similar platform.

4. Application period and interview schedule
For both Spring and Fall Semesters, the application period differs for: (A) those living abroad and in need of a student visa, and (B) other applicants.

5. Tuition
The following fees are subject to change.

  • (1) Enrolment fee: 84,600 yen
  • (2) Tuition fees: Spring Semester 178,200 yen, Fall Semester 178,200 yen

Eligibility :
Foreign nationals who have successfully completed the equivalent of 16 years (for Master’s) or 18 years (for Doctor’s) of school education or the equivalent. Students who are expected to graduate by March 31 apply for the follwing accademic year starting in April.
